The Jane Austen Hampshire Branch was started in 2002. Between 2008 and 2021 it was the Jane Austen Hampshire Group.
The Branch has the great advantage of serving the county Jane Austen knew and loved best, where she was born, where her novels were written, and where she died.
Our program usually includes an Annual General Meeting in April or May, when we have an outside speaker. We also aim to have up to four events throughout the year that may include outings, talks, discussions and other social events related to the Life and Times of Jane Austen.
One of our regular events is a lunch, usually in December or January, to celebrate Jane Austen’s birth.
We publish a Newsletter twice a year. We also publish our ‘Occasional Papers’ – articles of particular interest – in the form of a booklet. Members are sent a free copy but they are also available for non-members to buy.
We are a friendly group and have a membership of around 100. We have managed to hold our subscription costs at £5 per person, or £8 for two people living at the same address. Most of our members (not all) receive their Newsletter and other communications via e-mail. We aim for all our events to be self-financing enabling us to maintain our low subscription rates.
