Austen Ramble at Goodnestone
31 August 2024
Kent Branch event
A reminder that our 2024 Austen Ramble will be on Saturday 31st August. Meet at 1.15pm for a prompt 1.30pm start in the car park at Goodnestone Park Gardens (CT3 1PJ). We’ll congregate near the cafe entrance.
The circular walk will be undulating with no hills or stiles and is around 4.5 miles. The route is a mixture of footpaths and lanes.
We’ll visit the Ice House near Goodnestone House (the childhood home of Elizabeth Bridges who married Edward Knight), and a section of the Serpentine Walk; the historic Griffin’s Head pub in Chillenden where we’ll stop for up to 30 minutes; pass by Chillenden windmill; and get a glimpse of Rowling House (once owned and lived in by Edward Knight). We return to the cafe at Goodnestone for optional tea and cake at approx 4pm (last orders 4.30pm).
Well-behaved dogs on leads are allowed but there could be livestock present. Please bring water, hat, sunscreen, and suitable footwear, with long trousers recommended, and waterproofs if necessary.
You may wish to visit the gardens/cafe earlier in the day: the gardens open at 9am and entrance is £9. (Unfortunately the garden areas next to the house are not open on the 31st.)
