Branch Meeting and Lecture
230pm Angela Barlow, in an extensive acting career, has appeared in theatre, television and radio in classic and contemporary drama. She has also written and performed her own one-woman plays Reader, I Married Him and After Chekhov. She now regularly writes and speaks about aspects of Jane Austen around the UK and in the USA.
Her talk is entitled: “Jane Austen and London”
In a youthful letter from London Jane writes ‘Here I am once more in this scene of Dissipation & vice, and I begin already to find my Morals corrupted.’
Angela’s talk, illustrated with maps and many images, reveals Jane’s changing experience of London through the years, both in her novels and in her life. Although the ‘bad things’ that happen in Jane’s books are frequently set in London, in real life she found the city opened up her vision, giving her a new freedom and the gift of a deeper companionship with her brother Henry.
Entertaining extracts from the novels and letters illuminate this theme, keeping Jane Austen’s voice in our minds throughout.
Followed by complimentary tea, coffee and cakes.
£10 for members and £12 for non members.
All welcome.
